Competency-Based Skills Labs

SMEM will provide hands-on, competency-based skills training in a adult-learning based format.  

  • Participants will be able to review and practice their skills in a stress-free environment.  

  • Participants will be provided in-time objective feedback and performance metrics.

  • All skills training is conducted using high-fidelity manikins, task-specific training devices, and/or simulated patients


On-site skills training can include, but is not limited to:  

  • High-Quality Adult, Child, and/or Infant CPR / AED and rescue breathing

  • Pit-Crew CPR concepts

  • Adulty, Child, and/or Infant Foreign Body Airway Obstruction (FBAO)

  • Modified Jaw-thrust

  • Bag-valve mask ventilation

  • Airway adjunct insertion  (oropharyngeal airways (OPA);  nasopharyngeal airways (NPA))

  • Supraglottic airway insertion  (e.g.  iGel;  AirQ;  King airway; etc.)

  • Manual and mechanical suction techniques

  • Oxygen administration

  • Advanced wound care / uncontrolled bleeding management  (e.g.  tourniquets;  wound packing;  hemostatic dressings;  emergency trauma dressings;  IT clamp;  chest seals;  etc.)

  • Splinting / Immobilization  (SAM splint;  vacuum splints;  board splints;)

  • Advanced Splinting / Immobilization  (pelvic binder;  traction splinting)

  • Rectal temperature measurement

  • Cold Water Immersion (CWI) techniques

  • Patient movement techniques

  • Joint Reduction techniques  (shoulder;  elbow;  finger)

  • Lung auscultation

  • Naloxone (Narcan) administration

  • Diabetic management  (Glucagon administration;  glucometer use)

  • Epipen administration

  • Asthma Metered Dose Inhaler (MDI) administration and Peak-Flowmeter testing

  • Cervical immobilization and transfer techniques

  • Spinal motion restriction (SMR) techniques

  • Cervical collar placement

  • "Pretzels and Jams"  (unique cervical spine injury management)

  • Triage / Mass Casualty Incident

  • MARCHE trauma assessment

  • Vital Sign Trending

  • Equipment-laden athlete management  (football; lacrosse;  ice hockey;  baseball / softball catcher / umpire;  extreme sports;  tactical athlete;  etc.)

  • Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS)

  • EMS Handoff (MIST report;  ISBAR)
