
ADVANCED SPORTS TRAUMA MANAGEMEMT COURSE
(TM)
Sport Medicine Emergency Management utilizes a “walk, jog, run” approach to educations. Advanced Sports Trauma Management (TM) (ASTM) is conducted as a four (4) module hybrid course including online and in-person elements along with didactic and hands-on components.
WALK:
You and your students will receive pre-study material delivered in a virtual format to be completed at the student’s own pace. This allows for students to rewind and review material they aren’t as comfortable with. This content is regularly updates and includes a wide range of industry experts.
JOG:
After the pre-study material has been completed, faculty members from SMEM will provide on-site hands-on competency-based skills training sessions to allow students to practically apply the material they reviewed in the pre-course study material. This allows student to ask specific questions and be able to practice in a low stress facilitated environment.
RUN:
Now that the pre-course material has been reviewed and students have been guided through individual skills training, it is time to put everything together with scenario-based practical skills simulations. Each scenario is based on an ACTUAL real-world event and is accompanied by a video of the scenario occurring. This allows the students a realistic idea of what they are walking into. Additionally, SMEM utilizes high fidelity manakins which provide real-time feedback and allow students to perform and wide-range of interventions.
The ASTM (TM) course is approved by the Board of Certification, Inc. (BOC) to offer continuing education for certified athletic trainers (up to 19 Category-A CEUs) and is approved by the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) and American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties (ABPTS) Sports Physical Therapy Council to satisfy the Acute Management of Injury & Illness (AMII) requirement for the Sports Certified Specialist (SCS) credential.
All aspects of the ASTM (TM) course are customized for the client.
A minimum of two (2) SMEM clinical faculty will be utilized to effectively deliver the on-site portion of the program.
Masters'-level athletic training student interns from CAATE-Accredited athletic training programs may also be utilized to assist with logistical tasks on-site and serve as standardized patients (SP) when necessary
SMEM will provide manikins and necessary medical supplies needed to carry out the program.
The host should supply event specific items that will be present at venues (i.e. vacuum splints, spine board, team emergency kits, CWI tub, emergency transport vehicle) and EMS equipment.
SMEM will manage all aspects of program registration, day of program sign-in, and post-program assessment, evaluation, and BOC credentialing for athletic trainers.
All aspects of the on-site training should be conducted on an appropriate sized sports field / court if possible (~4000 sq ft / size of a basketball court)
Appropriate indoor accommodations should be available in the event of inclement weather or extreme heat

The competency-based hands-on skills review portion of the program is designed to allow certified athletic trainers the opportunity to review and perfect the low-frequency but high fidelity emergency care skills that are often needed in a critical incident.
Physicians, EMS providers, and others are welcome to attend this portion, but not required to.
